Sequoia & Tahoe: frequent long to very long pauses/freezing

This has been going on for a long time for me, for sure in the last few Sequoia releases, but now also in Tahoe 26.1 on a M3 MBP. Hammerspoon generally works fine for me. init.lua contains a bunch of hotkeys that are being registered with hs.hotkey.bind, nothing else.

Infrequently, but regularly (i.e. at least a few times per day), Hammerspoon seems to freeze completely for a few seconds, sometimes up to a minute. When hovering over the icon in the Apple menu bar, I get the usual rainbow-colored spinning circle. If the Hammerspoon console was up, I get the spinning circle there as well. As far as I can tell, absolutely nothing is happening. My hotkey actions are all pretty benign, nothing wait-worthy in particular. The freezing also happens when I don't press a hotkey for a while; I only notice it when pressing one and nothing happens -> then I mouse-over the icon and see the spinner.

Loading my init.lua in itself goes quick and painless, no hickup there.

Unfortunately I cannot give that much more info. I seem to be on the current version of Hammerspoon:

The console does not bring any insights; no errors, nothing about something not working or taking long.

I'm also still experiencing this, M4 + Sequoia 15.7.2 + HS 1.0.0 (6864) here.

There were an issue or two reported on this already. But can't be sure these are the cause.

For me I still have the feeling it's related to either hs.execute or getWindows hanging because it's quering unresponsive processes.

appwatcher - no. I do have one filter that is globally activated like so:

hs.window.filter.default:subscribe(hs.window.filter.windowFocused, puttyPasteCheckWindow)

That function checks the currently focused window (hs.window.focusedWindow()) and enables or disables a hotkey depending on whether it has a certain title (puttyPasteHotkey:enable() ...). That comment you linked seems to indicate possible trouble if some other window is frozen while getWindows is called - I cannot say I generally experience frozen other windows often or at least when Hammerspoon is frozen at the same time. I'll try to pay more attention to whether those happen.

As you mention hs.execute, I don't use that either.

Yup. Known that window filter is quite buggy since years because of macOS API, IIRC.
You better track your own windows based on focus event etc, unfortunately. I think I already saw a custom libs around to heavy lift the work.
