When I run ./gradlew ktlintCheck I got the following error:

Cannot add task 'loadKtlintReporters' as a task with that name already exists.

What am I missing here?

I'm guessing the KtlintExtension doesn't need to be configured for each subproject. It probably registers the task loadKtlintReporters for the root project, and in your example, attempting to add the same task repeatedly.

As an aside, I believe Gradle advises against using the subprojects block; instead write a precompiled script plugin in buildSrc, and use that in individual submodule build scripts.
