MathLink parsing of $ leads to errors

Hi, I'm not sure if MathLink.jl is actively supported but I thought I will take a chance. I was trying to evaluate

but the replacement "$"->"" seems to trip it up. I tried "\$"->"" and "\\$"->"" but nothing seems to work.

I get this error ---

Hi @gganapat.
I can confirm that there is a bug here: And the minmal working example already shows up here

We will fix this in a future release. In the meantime, may i suggest a workaround that also plays to the strengths of MathLink.

Instead of doing all the logic and manipulations inside of MatheMatica. Just extport it to MathLink after it has been read and continue from there.

using DataFrames
##Read the data and export the list of accociations to Julia
AssociationThread = weval(W`data = Import["Activities042152025.csv", "CSV"];
ds = AssociationThread[data[[1]] -> #] & /@ Rest[data]`)

Convert the AssociationThread to a list of dicitonaries

JuliaListofDicts = W2Julia(AssociationThread)

Then collect the keys anf make a Julia DataFrame with all the data

TheKeys=collect(keys(JuliaListofDicts[1]))

df = DataFrame(TheKeys[1] => [ x[TheKeys[1]] for x in JuliaListofDicts])

for key_no in 2:length(TheKeys)
    DataToFrame=[ x[TheKeys[key_no]] for x in JuliaListofDicts]
    df[!,TheKeys[key_no]]=DataToFrame
end
display(df)

Now you can do your manipulations directly on the Julia datafram instaed oif going through Mathematica. For instance you can do the replace like this:

replace.(df[:,"NetAmount"],"\$"=>"","(" =>"-",","=>"",")"=>"")

In passing let me also mentions that since you target here mostly eems to read the CSV file you can do this directly with the command

using CSV
using DataFrames
df = DataFrame(CSV.File(Activities042152025.csv))

You can latex export to exell if you would like using

using XLSX
XLSX.writetable(df, "XLSXTab" => df,overwrite=true)

I hope this will allow you to continue for now.

Very nice! Thanks for the suggestions! I will wait for the bug fix. I like MathLink.jl a lot and hopefully little bugs like this can be squashed if/when they arise.

@gganapat - I looked more into it and indeed the problem is that the '$' is not escaped correctly when converting to mathematica instructions. This I'm wokring on a solution but there are some glitches. Hopefully this can be released soon.

@gganapat - partially solved. I could track down the error and added some extra code to specifically handle escaping of $'s. I have now pushed that back into main. However there are some subtle error with the order of resolving expressions that still lingers to this can not be released as a new version just yet.

However, feel free to try it out by downloading the source coda and running it yourself using the normal activate commands.

@fremling, thanks! I'm having difficulty implementing the "normal activate commands". I downloaded the MathLink code and cd'd into a local folder to activate the folder. Trying to add MathLink gave error. Obviously, I'm not doing it right. Do I need to be within subfolder of MathLink-master to make it work?

Hi. Strange. It should be suffient to stand in the main directory of the package (where the `Project.toml` is), run Julia, press `]` to open the package manager and then do pkg> activate . After that you can go back to the Julia prom and load MathLink the the usual `using MathLink` command. This will the load the local MathLink instead of the "global" one. The first time you do this it will trigger an installation step where MathLink finds your Mathematica installation. If you keep having problems let me know and I'll see what I can do.

ok, thanks! It worked fine now! I was doing it in Pluto, so had to activate within Pluto for it to work.

Good news! The problem is now solved! It will be availalbe in a few minutes when the new code has been deployed to the Julia repo.

@fremling, looks like there is still a problem. I deleted the old MathLink pkg and installed the latest version. However, it looks like I'm still having issues.

Is there something wrong in my code? I don't think so since it works in Mathematica.

@gganapat: Have you tried escaping the dollar sign? The `$`needs to be `\$` otherwise Julia will try and replace it with a value.
