AUR Support

Halo people

I was installing on a 1050Ti with a RealTek Wifi card this afternoon and obviously had to do a more minimal install and then use a AUR helper to get the proper drivers.

I was wondering if adding a AUR helper directly would be a good idea in the installer.
Recently I've been contributing to grimaur and since it's fully in Python I thought it could be a good idea?
Anyways love to hear thoughts on this and limitations.

I tried to search here and didn't find much directly addressing the subject.

And any reason exactly ? I mean for some ( a lot ) of drivers it's basically the only way no ?

I'm always for saying to other users to use the aur as little as possible but in this case if an OS installer, welp user needs working drivers OOTB

It's Arch staff general consensus basically. I can try to find info on it but not sure what it would do here.

The best option is to adopt the AUR packages in question so they become available in extra. But if its drivers for really old stuff then I'm not sure staff members have enough time to do so.

Maybe we could do it in a kind of whitelist basis: Notably a lot of drivers... yes for older hardware but still very common in users.

This also one of the strength of arch being able to run on any kind of potato

Does the wiki have any guidelines gor such cases? Archinstall follows the wiki quite well and if there's no mention of AUR in there either I'd assume that the official support gor an installation in that regard is limited.

We need to be careful not to extend the support for archinstall beyond any maintainable state just to accommodate every potato out there, there's a lot of them :)

I'm not sure. Again, I always tell other new users to limit to usage to things that they "know"

But in certain install cases (nvidia, realtek, broadwell), it could be super useful for out of the box installs

Other than that, I agree about maintainability, hence why I thought we could explore a python based tool and whitelist basis 🤔

Grimaur works in a single file and has RPC + git fallback for when the aur is down
