Laser connects to Lasergrbl, but can't control laser

I just received the Genmitsu laser CFL55-P for my 3018 prover v2 CNC. I have downloaded Lasergrbl, gone through all the configuration steps. It connects, fan on laser turns on, laser fire manually from button on laser controller. Jog controls work from lasergrbl. I've installed the new user buttons. The problem is it appears some of them are grayed out. The button for focus, turn laser on 2sec, fan on/off don't work.
Any help or insight as to what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
