Question: Why is `node@^23.9.0` a dependency?

I noticed that node@^23.9.0 is specified as a dependency. I assume this is to ensure the project uses this specific Node version instead of the system's default. Would it be possible to use an LTS version instead? Upgrading to 23.9.0 has caused some problems in the console output for me.

Related: Listing node in the package.json breaks the nix packaging, which is why #54 edits it out. Maybe it can be dropped completely? (Not sure if it is good practice to include node itself as a package dependency.)

If we still want to ensure that a specific version or range of versions is used then I suggest we use the engines field in the package.json something like this:

"engines" : { 
  "node" : ">=22.0.0 <23.0.0"
}

This would by itself only result in warnings if an unsupported version would be used. If we really want to enfore that npm only uses the allowed versions of Node we can create (and commit) .npmrc with the contents:

engine-strict=true
