Indeed, lk2nd menu deliberately cuts off characters that can't fit into the line since the menu code is "ridgid" and doesn't support line breaks since the layout is fully static. If we weren't cutting the string, the garbaged characters would appear folded over the framebuffer, which you can see by removing the limit here:
