That's a fair point. Version drift can definitely cause issues. That said, I'm not a huge fan of CLI tools making unsolicited network requests to check for updates. It adds a dependency on external infrastructure and feels like it should be the package manager's job.

I use brew personally, so I get updates through that. If nctl isn't distributed through common package managers, that might be the more impactful thing to address. It would solve the version problem without baking update logic into the tool itself.

No, I use the AUR package: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/nctl. I just noticed someone running an outdated version and having an issue that was solved by updating nctl.
